Presentation About The Remains And Conservation Works Of The Sultan Suleyman The Magnificent Bridge Located at Osijec, Croatia

Presentation about “The Remains and Conservation Works of the Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent Bridge“ took place at Koç University RCAC Auditorium in 8 October 2013. The presentation was organized by TINA (Türkiye Sualtı Arkeoloji Enstitüsü – The Turkish Foudation of Underwater Archeology) and Istanbul Univeristy Department of Restoration and Conservation of Movable Cultural Assets. Before the conference, attending guests visited the Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project Research Laboratory and had a briefing about the ongoing work by Project Director Assoc. Prof. Ufuk Kocabaş and Research Associate Namık Kılıç.

The tour continued with the presentation about documentation, lifting and conservation methods used in Yenikapı Shipwrecks by Assoc. Prof. Ufuk Kocabaş, and ended with the presentation about genus-species identification conducted on the timbers from the shipwrecks by Prof. Ünal Akkemik, Head of the Department of Forest Botany, Istanbul University’s Faculty of Forestry. The event continued with the presentation made by Mledan Pesic at 16:30. In the presentation Pesic stated that the wooden bridge built in the 16th and 17th century with the order of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent at Osijek, Provinance of Budin under the Ottoman rule and it was found in 2008. He also stated that the conservation work of the remains of the bridge considered to be the 8th wonder of the world in its time and it will be continued with the Polyethylen glycol (PEG) method. After the conference, with the request of President of TINA Oğuz Aydemir, Assoc. Prof. Ufuk Kocabaş informed the guests about waterlogged wood conservation.
