President Gul visited Yenikapı

President Abdullah Gül visited the Unearthed Yenikapı Shipwrecks by Istanbul University

President of the Republic of Turkey Abdullah Gül visited the Yenikapı Excavation Area, that changed the history of Istanbul, on Sunday, 5 September 2009. President Abdullah Gül was informed by officials about the excavation site found during the Marmaray and Yenikapı metro project, and later he went to the excavation site. President Abdullah Gül met with officials and staff, then visited the shipwrecks section conducted by Istanbul University Department of Restoration and Conservation of Movable Cultural Assets.

President Abdullah Gül recieved detailed information about the shipwrecks from Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project Director Asst. Prof. Ufuk Kocabaş, stated that the excavations have an immense importance in history of humanity and expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul University and other instititions.

Istanbul University Assistant to Rector Prof. Ahmet M. Gökçen, Secretary General Dr. Yusuf Akça, Director of Press and Human Relations Asst. Prof Ergün Yolcu accompanied President Abdullah Gül at the excavation site.
