 Waterlogged Wood Conservation Workshop -İstanbul

“Waterlogged Wood Conservation Workshop” took place for the first time in Turkey between the dates of 20-24 August 2009 at the Istanbul University Faculty of Letters Yenikapı Shipwrecks Research Center and Ship Conservation and Reconstruction Laboratory. The workshop organized by IU Department of Conservation of Marine Archaeological Objects and Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project and it was carried out with the attendance of UNESCO-ICOM The Working Group Wet Organic Archaeological Materials (WOAM) coordinator Kristiane Strætkvern and Head Conservator of National Museum of Denmark Waterlogged Wood Laboratory Dr. Paul Jensen.

The workshop started with guest experts and participants visiting the Yenikapı Excavation area with the guidance of Dr. Ufuk Kocabaş and carrying out detailed investigation on the ongoing work of the Yenikapı 22. In the workshop carried out at IU Laboratories, applied trainings were done on the subject of: Determination of the deterioration state of waterlogged wood remains, mechanical and chemical cleaning of timbers, desalination, selection and usage of biological activity preventatives and conservation. Dr. Jensen’s experiences on “Polyethylene Glycol” impregnation and afterwards the “Freeze Drying” method planned to be used for Yenikapı Shipwrecks and the production of the device used in this method were the leading topics. Strætkvern and Jensen, who informed the guests with a four session presentation about conservation work continued on Viking Shipwrecks in Denmark, did an interactive training on excavating wet ropes, after a long question and answer session.
