IU Department of Restoration and Conservation of Movable Cultural Assets organized two conferences on Wednesday, 19 April 2006 within the scope of the project they undertook at Yenikapı excavations.
Expert Restorator Markus Wittköpper from RGZM Museum für Antike Schiffart (Mainz-Germany) and Archaeologist Metin Gökçay; one of the experts from Istanbul Archaeological Museums, attended as speakers to this meeting that took place at Kuyucu Murat Paşa Madrasah.
Guest speaker Markus Wittköpper, during his speech about “Excavation, Conservation and Restoration of Waterlogged Wooden Ships at Mainz” introduced Roman ships on display at Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Museum für Antike Schiffahrt and explained the methods of lifting as a single mass. Kauramin 800; produced by BASF Chemical Co. , an improved version of Arigal C used in 1960’s at Switzerland, was used for shipwreck conservation. Low viscosity rate, being water based, small molecule size and its suitability to archaeological wood are the most important features that led researchers to use of this resin.
The second conference under the title of “Assessment of Excavations within the Yenikapı Metro and Marmaray Projects” was presented by Archaeologist Metin Gökçay. The speech consisted of two main parts; introduction of the excavation site and small findings. Gökçay stated that seven shipwrecks were found at the excavation site called the 1st zone in the Harbour of Theodosius and the first ship was found under amphoras by Archaeologist Rahmi Asal; Assistant Manager of Istanbul Archaeological Museums.[/vc_column_text][TS_VCSC_Lightbox_Gallery content_images=”9258,9259,9260,9261″ content_images_titles=”Toplantının gerçekleştirildiği İstanbul Üniversitesi Rektörlüğü Güzel Sanatlar Bölümü Başkanlığı, Kuyucu Murat Paşa Medresesi.,RGZM, Museum für Antike Schiffart’dan (Mainz-Almanya) Uzman Restoratör Markus Wittköpper. ,Konservasyon çalışması tamamlanarak RGZM’de sergilenen batık” lightbox_effect=”swipe” lightbox_backlight=”custom” lightbox_backlight_color=”#7b1a1f” el_file1=”” el_file2=””][/TS_VCSC_Lightbox_Gallery][/vc_column][/vc_row]
